When most of the countries are on lockdown, and the overwhelming news from around the world the COVID-19 global crisis has caused, we can’t help but feel sad and anxious. Life is crucial for most of us when this pandemic had struck, celebrations are canceled, travel plans put aside, family reunions and intimate gatherings are on hold. How much more when you are leaving alone and being away from your loved ones.
Now more than ever, this is the time to be resilient and be positive. As humans, we have stood and survived through the test of times in the face of great disasters, earthquakes, floods, and volcanic eruptions. We can also do better during this COVID crisis.
I am sharing you now my practical and personal tips on how to stay optimistic and how to cope with stress better during this crisis:

LEARN A NEW PASSION OR SKILLS
This is the time, you rekindle your childhood passion for sewing or in arts and crafts. In the country I live, surgical masks are already running out. To fight boredom while we are on community quarantine, I initiated in making a facial mask. My mother continued while I was busy working remotely. We were able to finish ten hand-sewed facial masks for the family. Think about what excites you to do that was put behind due to your busy work. Maybe a favorite book that you wish to finish reading or learning a new recipe on Youtube. Your free time will give you an opportunity to uplevel your resume, by learning new skills.
When I did my usual morning cleaning routine, I saw lots of coloring pens in my cabinet and I remembered, my partner gave me these along with the Secret Garden coloring book as my birthday presents. Now I have no reason not to color it. I have tons of time while on home isolation.
PRAY OR MEDITATE FOR MENTAL HEALTH
This is the moment that we all kneel and pause for a moment to pray and meditate. Regardless of religion, we should all say prayers and protection especially to the people who face the virus threats, our doctors and medical workers, the public servants, the policemen, and most especially to all who are sick and the vulnerable that they may receive healing towards recovery. We say our prayers because we believe that this all shall pass. On the other hand, the meditation releases the body from any negativity. It’s a proven study that taking deep breaths and exhale releases tension, which eases up our nervous system. Meditation is effective when you play guided soulful music, like nature or rain. When we allow ourselves to live in fear and take in lots of negativities from this virus threat, we failed to notice the small but good things around us, the smile of our baby who’s excited to see you after ending your shift, the scent of morning coffee, the clean house, and the blessings received despite these challenges felt.
LISTEN TO PODCAST OR WEBINAR
This is your chance to listen to subject matter experts, influencers, strategists and thinkers on certain topics. Learn from their insights, through a podcast or webinars. This is an online platform where everyone converged, listen and ask questions to a certain topic. I can listen to an online forum and interviews at Hanna Fitz on how to stay afloat and thrive as a business in this global pandemic. You may check https://www.facebook.com/seashellconsulting for the live forums and interviews. At work, I am tasked to talk about a topic about Women and Gender Equality via the Zoom meeting to be attended with our employees. It was long overdue activity in time for Women’s Month, but because of COVID, we will make it happen — virtually.
EXERCISE TO INCREASE IMMUNITY
An ounce of prevention is better than cure, there goes an adage about taking care of oneself. Along with social distancing, boost immunity by eating a well-balanced diet like fruits and vegetables. Same with meditation and prayer, an exercise in the comforts of your home lessens stress and anxiety. I started my morning routine before my remote work start by tuning in to a virtual Zumba class on Facebook. It feels good to sweat out even in the corners of your room. I open the windows and let the sunshine touches the sheets of our bed and the skin. According to research, sunlight influences immunity.
Stay tuned for Part 2 on how I remained optimistic and positive during our enhanced community quarantine.
